Thank you for such wonderful comments.  I know this sort of thing isn't everyone's cup of tea (as we say here in the UK!).  Of course it doesn't matter at all whether you understand what you're doing or not, as long as you're doing it.  I just got into this modal stuff a year or so back whilst playing the melodeon and it kind of fascinated me. Of course I'll leave the link up - that's a lot of information to ingest in one sitting.

I suspect that I just watched the single greatest music lesson I've ever had.  I think I'd like to study this a little further...

I admit to being the guy who simply puts his fingers in the right place and plays the tune.  I either never had this lesson in modes, or I blocked it out because I didn't understand.  Please leave the link up so I can hit it repeatedly.

Excellent lesson and explanation of some of the modes. In American Old Time music we simply call any tune that uses notes that are different from the major scale  "modal"  It's a bit vague because which mode it's in is never discussed. We simply play the tune enough times until folks get the idea. I've learned that it's a thankless job trying to explain different modes to a group of banjo players who simply want to put their fingers in the right place and play the tune.
