SPENCER'S HOMEGROWN MUSIC

CornFed Grooves

In case you didn’t know, the economy is in the toilet and unemployment runs rampant nation wide. In conjunction with that, wood prices are on the rise and therefore so are instrument prices. Cigar Box Guitars have a rich American tradition reaching as far back as the 1840's, and a long list of musical pioneers like Lightning Hopkins, Jimi Hendrix, Roy Clark, Albert King, and Buddy Guy who all got their start on cigar box instruments. Since not everyone can afford a fancy instrument, when you find yourself with the desire but not the means, do it the old fashion American way and make it yourself. Make a diddley bow, guitar, dulcimer, banjo, mandolin or ukulele.

If you find yourself like me, with no money and all the time in the world...pick up a cigar box instrument of your choice, sit on the porch, take a deep breath and play your blues away.

Look around, post comments, ask questions, and just enjoy.

Jon Spencer

I agree with your assessment of the country and I see it 5 days a week when I'm busy hawking my instruments while "on the clock" working for the Mall at the same time.
This weekend was a perfect example of what your talking about.97% of the tourists were window shoppers that wanted to haggle on prices.
I'm already "haggled" as low as I can go and still make a decent profit on my time and investment.LOL

Thank you for your comment about my busking video. Actually this guitar is very light. I think the box is pine. It kind of breaks the rule. Usually wood reso are built from ply because the cross grain makes it sturdier or solid hardwood, but I think the builder, Jimmy Millinchuk reglued this box so tight, is just will not move and sends all the sound out the cone.

Thank you for your interest in the group and reply. Certainly any instructional videos you could supply or any material you can encourage other players to post, I know will be greatly appreciated. Enjoy.
