Latest Song lyrics - "Hawks and Vultures" - inspired by Townes Van Zandt

Hawks and Vultures

There’s little hope for flyin’ free, when walkin' towards Eternity

The hawks and vultures hangin’, stoopin’ low.

Your flattened fortunes on the road, the armadillo overload,

The lost highway of dreams you’ll never know.

Black bird upon the wire high, who’s blinkin’ back your eagle eye

With carrion compadre’s upturned grin;

Seems like the joke’s on you, y’know, but then you find it isn’t so:

They're laughin’ just to see the shape you’re in.

They spiral to the ground -

That mournful mornin' sound -

Dark angels touchin' down,

Come to take you home.

The sunshine quivers recklessly beneath their feathered canopies;

The dust motes dance despite the dimming light.

They fan the ashes of despair, ridin' the Devil’s rockin' chair,

The hawks and vultures waitin' 'til it's right.

They spiral to the ground -

That mournful mornin' sound -

Dark angels touchin' down,

Come to take you home.

A sigh to take your breath away, a whisper of the wind at play:

Leavin' lovin's easier than livin’ in it.

The hawk will teach you ‘bout the sky, the vulture’s screech will soon reply:

When your hour’s come, it only takes a minute.

They spiral to the ground -

That mournful mornin' sound -

Dark angels touchin' down,

Come to take you home.

Comin’ to take you home,

Hawks and vultures.

Sounding great "Oily"!!   "Missing Link" has a real nice feel to it!  It remindes me of Hot Tuna from back in the day. I went to band camp (oilyfool.bandcamp.com) , nothing there yet.

Thought I would like the slower version better, but my vote is for the faster one.  It gives the song a sense of impending doom, like trying to outrun the Hawks and Vultures.  Definitely has a 90s grunge vibe.

hmmmmm ,I agree w James ,I like both for different reasons would have liked to hear slow one first, lol,.Great stuff , nice production.....BTW , no such thing as too long in rock n roll,I'm sure James would concur hardily on that point.....keep rockin

Writer's Block, or What To Expect When You're Expectorating

So, sometimes, I can't write a lyric for spit. Other times, they just seem to flow through me, like the bad chicken burrito you had for lunch from the little street cart.

One of the ways I deal with it is to play with words and word order. For example, I like to start with song titles, but frequently, the Aether has other ideas, and sends me single lines, as images. One of these just popped into my head on seeing the CBN Group title, The Blues Exchange. First, I ran that all… Continue
