Started this discussion. Last reply by Janis Wilson Hughes yesterday. 13 Replies

Hey y'all, so when I started fretting I went with a StewMac fretsaw which does a fantastic job. But I have chronic hand/wrist issues, and the labor of hand cutting the slots leaves me hurting. I…Continue

Janis Wilson Hughes replied to Ducati Scotty's discussion Tone control on inexpensive pre-wired pickups. Is it worth it?
"I agree with Chickenbone John. The tone control will play a bigger role with a nicer amp. I don't like to fiddle with my amps all the time. Generally speaking as a player I like to have tone control, but as a builder I often don't add a…"

"Agreed! I just got an arbor press/fret press set up a couple weeks ago. I haven't been able to try it yet. Hopefully I've got the scroll saw blade situation sorted now too. This combo should greatly reduce my hand pain."

"Not really an answer to the blade width, but for your hand/wrist issues you might try pressing in the frets instead of pounding them in.  Some hard wood blocks and a decent vise will push them in with little effort."

Making music on an instrument you made yourself is magical! I'm a sculptor by profession and love making things by hand. Took bass lessons in high school then learned rhythm guitar about 18 years ago. Just started building CBGs for fun last year. Now I can't stop.

My first solo build - and first post

Posted on January 2, 2016 at 10:54am 20 Comments

After designing a few CBGs and lap diddley bows that my husband brought to life with power tools, I made my first solo creation this week, and I'm smitten with my guitar style diddley bow.

While I've made 2 lap diddley bows and 4 CBGs…

I think a couple of things are at work in you making top content. First it's a very cool first solo build and your playing is great for just starting to play slide. Another thing, that we've discussed among ourselves, is the large number of old, retired, greybeards around here. For a lot of us it's wonderful to see someone who doesn't fit that description and has obvious enthusiasm for homemade music.

Oh, I'm glad you liked the  U bass!

I spent a bit of time today looking at some of your pottery/stoneware vids. Excellent stuff! After looking at you ceramic djembe it got me thinking about a ceramic banjo. Wouldn't be too different from the drum, it would just have to have a hole for the neck to pass thru and a small hole on the opposite end to secure the neck with a screw. That would be a pretty cool combination of your skills.
