This could be git related or not. So, what's on your workbench at the moment?
I have 4 scarf joint necks in different stages of work.
A 25" scale pine 5 string neck for a Banjo-Res, A 25" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Strat-Res build, A 24 & 1/2" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Double Cut Tele build and a 27" scale 6 string Baritone Conversion neck for a Modern Strat body I have.

I know absolutely nothing about pickups, beyond the basic differences between a piezo and a magnetic pickup. What is going on with a "scatterwound" that makes it behave differently?
Scatter wound is when the wire is wrapped randomly rather than the wire being wrapped neatly side by side. The only problem is that it leaves gaps between the other wraps, so they must be wax potted or they will be microphonic?
Pickups will always be microphonic to some degree whether they are potted or not. Potting just lowers the amount, which is a good thing because too much microphonics leads to squeals and constant feedback, the right amount of potting stops that and also gives us the guitar's tone too.
Many love that scatter-wound effect on their pickup's sound while others find it to be too much.
When I was young I liked that Ted Nugent sound effect(I think his pickups were scatter-wound), then I started to like pickups that were well potted, but not too much. Those EMG pickups sealed in epoxy always seemed to have a sort of sterile sound to me.
Southern Ray, I used to always use a A/audio pot for volume and a B/linear for tone, but now I use B/linear pots for both volume and tone with 50's style wiring and love it.
The pots work together very well to alter tones from your guitar. Clapton's "Woman Tone" is tone rolled back to about 2 and volume on 10 on the neck position pickup which has a rich dark tone(think "White Room" sound). On guitars with 2 pickups and 4 controls like a LP, you can set that neck controls where you like it and set the bridge where you like and use the switch to mix them and get an awesome tone(something I do on my Bluesbird).
I have some single coil Lindy Fralin & Jason Lollar pickups that are totally wax potted , but definitely not sterile, in fact I can stand right in front of my cranked JCM800 with no squeals or interference? I think it really has to do with how they’re made, attention to detail is very important with pickups, not a big deal with most pickup manufacturers.
Fralin and Lollar make great pickups, in fact, Lollar is the only winder thats making true spec Gold Foils with the old style rubber magnets. Pretty penny though.
Paul another thing to factor in about the woman tone that people always miss is that his tone section is modified with a mid bump filter, it’s hard to see those things when they’re under the hood, I saw it first hand, on his US tour with SRV? One thing I learned was that all of the guitar god guys never roll stock, that’s why it’s so hard to get their exact tone?
True, but I thought that the mid boost circuit came after his work in Cream. He went to using his Strat more and needed that extra mid boost. I may be wrong on that.
They always misdirect people on their real sound equipment and secrets. Billy Gibbons is probably the worst about saying this or that about his sound. He told people he used a Peso for a pick and people went out getting Peso's by the dozen. Hahaha
I believe the first to get the mod was the red Gibson hollow body, yes you’re right about that, who would give their secrets away, even Hendrix had tone mods in his studio rig? Yea, I’m actually surprised Billy gets the tone he does with those dinky little strings he uses? He’s a real sweetheart on camera, but not off camera? Sorry, had to get that out :)
Yea, I got my Lollar’s when he was almost unknown, which means they were actually wound by him & less than $100. The Fralin pickup wasn’t as expensive as they are now either, I consider myself lucky to have it! Even he wasn’t as known to the public until the 2000’s, despite being around for decades. You would have palpitations if you saw my collection of Gold, Silver foil pickups!
Tease! Now I want to see them. Hahahaha
I wish I had bought a bunch of those pickups back in the day.
Billy and his 7's, I don't know how you can play those. I was always breaking the high e on the 9's and had to go up to 10's. Billy said BB told him to use those 7's, maybe BB was pulling his leg for a change.;)
