Hi, can anybody suggest the best cigar box to make a six stringer. I have a bolt on fender neck.

Good question 'cause I need suggestions also. I'm building a 6-string guitar for a young friend using a wooden six bottle wine case (Pulenta Gran Malbec from Argentina). She's married to an Argentine, thus the wooden box has family significance. I've reduced the depth of the case and thinned the boards to improve resonance.  I've built the neck from scrap mahogany from a cabinet shop and scrap walnut for the fretboard. The project is more than a challenge for my skills, but it's what a good friend wants. My next build MUST use a cigar box!

Ive decided to go ahead with the build while waiting for a good answer that hopefully I will be able to use for my next six stringer......Ive built a solid body within the cigar box and attached the neck with bolts........so far so good.......

I like the brick house box because if it's size. It had a nice heavy wood also, so when it's time to put everything together it will be more solid. It also is a cool looking box that can be dressed nicely! My 2¢. I started a six string but the box I bought in ebay turned out o be cardboard. I make Ukuleles now instead because it's easier to attach

thank you ill check them out......

I gave up trying to find such a big box in the UK. Some possible places to drop an email on the chance they have one in stock would be here
https://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/accessories-empty-cigar-boxes-c-319_546.... Ask though, I tried an order of the "large" boxes and all three were 10" or less (good boxes though).

Chickenbone John is probably the best known seller in the UK and has an online shop
http://chickenbonejohn.myshopify.com Lookng through most of his current stock has sold but he does get busy and might have some he hasn't had chance to list yet. His email is at the bottom of the linked page

I have made mainly 6 string box guitars and use the old Boots wooden photo slide boxes which are perfect in size. eBay normally has one or two for auction at any one time (sell for around £10 plus £5 postage) make sure it holds 175 slides, any less means the box is less than 12". The wood looks good and is the ideal size for adding a bolt on neck.
This is the type I mean

Here are 3 photo slide box guitars I have added strat necks to so you can get an idea of how they look.

mighty pretty looking Guitars..........

I will look for them on Ebay now.....Thank you

There is no Spoon!

"best" is subjective.  Use whatever appeals to you that when you look at it you think "that box is begging to be a 6-stringer".

If its acoustic only, bigger is louder, smaller is more traveler-portable.

If its a mag pickup, anything will work, there are pleanty of commercially produced electric guitars that have NO body, just a through neck with no wings that work fine.

So feel free to be creative.

Good advice.....Thank you

I've done this before, granted using a Cookie Tin instead of a Cigar Box. you need to build an internal framework inside the Cigar Box with a length of wood sticking out of one end, to mount the neck on. I've used White Ash or Mahogany for mine, but anything solid enough will do the job, you don't need a lot of framework, just enough to mount the neck and re-enforce the bridge mount.

Here's my one
