Merry Christmas everyone. Just wondering if anybody got any good stuff for their CBGS under the tree this year.

I try not to let my hobby gouge into my family's  budget too much so I tend to ask for tools and supplies for my birthday and Chrtistmas. Over the past couple years my tool box has grown quite steadily.

This Christmas my wonderful wife got me nut files and a fret finishing kit (leveling board, rocker and crowning tool). Those guys are going to take a lot of frustration away...I hope. I also received a digital caliper micrometer and some clamps. I always ask for clamps. I always seem to need a couple more.

Have a Happy New Year and here's to keeping the craft alive and creating some great guitars over the next 12 months.

Nathan.

After the decorations come off my tree will make a fine uke neck.

I got a scroll saw! F-holes, here I come!

I guess I will have to buy my own cigar box guitar Christmas present, I was looking at one of these what do you think? http://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Straightedges/S...

I have had that tool for a good many years and have found it quite useful.

But...

It is a good tool to own if you do a lot of work on guitars/basses that have different nut widths.

For CBGs - not so much. They are of no use at all on 3 string CBGs IMO and only of marginal use on 4 stringers. The reason for this is because the nut width is almost always going to be 1.5 inches and once you have a template, that's all you will ever need.

If you plan on making custom tapered necks for 4/5/6/n string gits, then again it would be a good tool to have.

Otherwise you can save some money by using one of the on-line calculators. Here are a few:

Just google the term "guitar nut string spacing calculator" and you'll find others.

I got a mandolin and a bowed psaltery. Not CBG related, but it's musical.

I've never heard a psaltery before. Very cool sound.

Cloths and things to use wile cooking. I have several gift cards but haven't decided what I want to get myself yet.
