I've been struggling with nasty adhesive on cigar boxes for the last 8 years. Heat helps with most, but there's always a box that has an ugly price tag or some other unwanted sticky tag. I've used rubbing alcohol and many other chemical concoctions until today! The answer for me is olive oil! Virgin if ya got it! Give it a try. I didn't even have to add an elbow grease-the adhesive just melted off!

P.S. And if ya say you've been using this method for years, I hope ya shared it with others before now! Hope this helps some builders in out community!

Cheers,

My method of removing stickers is start with heat then remove sticker.
Residual glue is removed using a pencil eraser. It starts out looking worse and then it all just goes.

I have removed the sticker from a smooth, finished surface and then cleaned off the residue with a piece of bread.  Yup.  Just rub it on.  Not much for making sandwiches afterward, but it works.

I have read it is good as adhesive remover but I would think on a cigar box as many are not clear coated would cause staining. Did you have any issues?
Cool. When it soaks in does it dry on the surface or will always be oily?
Thanks. I will test it on some junk boxes I got. I got a bunch of boxes at a cigar shop and within a week of being out of their humid environment two from the same band of cigar warped badly. I noticed one warped and then a few days later the other did it. So they are now testing boxes....
Yup, heat , peel, and remove the residue with a small amount of olive oil. This box was sealed so I'm not sure if it would stain an unfinished box. I usually put a coat of shellac over raw wood boxes anyway.

I use Heat Gun on low and remove the sticky remains with lighter fluid, .

But it always sticks to the roof of my guitar;)

like Mike said.

I'll try this. I 've had best results with lighter fluid or goo gone.

Anybody that has made their first CBC has cussed those labels. For you folks that use oil based finishes, this is worth a look and see, however I would strongly recommend trying this on a piece of scrap if you are using lacquer or polyurethane.as top coat. Same goes with paraffin as a lubricant for saw fences and saw tables, featherboards and such. Also silicone spray is a guilty party. It will cause a finish defect I have heard called "fish eye" or "cratering". Learned this the hard way.
