Do most folks space their strings so that the gap between the strings is the same at the nut as it is at the bridge?

I have seen some pics where it looks like the spacing gets just a tad bigger the closer to the bridge it gets.

Good question. Dunno. I haven't seen the same but then again I'm not paying attention to those. I usually space the same at the nut and bridge so I can play slide better. Tho I don't really know [read: haven't seen any one say to do one way or another].

Hey, go for it.
On a cigar box,, you can have the strings spaced a mile / kilometer apart. On precision built guitars, the fret hand end strings are spaced closer together for finger fretting, and the strings at the bridge is spaced slightly wider to allow for picking and strumming room. You can space them any distance you want, your the engineer, but "most folks" that build cigar boxers just space them by the seat of their pants, or just swag it. If you plan on just using a slide, you can have them as wide as you want. However, if you plan on fretting and finger playing, you might want to have the strings closer together and lower to the frets at the headstock end.
One of the nice things about the eyebolt bridge / #8-32 bolt nut combination is that you can adjust the spacing to fit what is comfortable for the individual player.
