It's the first step Jim. Once the batch is thrown it is time to trim each slide. the cutoff side is rough and needs reeming with a fettling knife to open it up to the size of my pinkie. I wet a finger and smooth the bore and sponge the edges till smooth and rounded. Then I roll the slide on the table to even out the sides and round it back strait. Once finished the batch is set to dry a few days. Then loaded in an electric kiln to bisque fire to cone 08. Once bisque fired I'll dip glaze each slide (Shino glaze in my case). I use Shino as it does not run in firing. It can get some nice carbon trap effects in reduction gass firing. Toasty edges and smokey clouds. It's a variation of ancient Chinese glaze that I have worked with for a long time. I do my paintings on that glaze too. The CBG picker mugs are painted with colorents over the Shino glaze. Then the slides are loaded into our gas kiln and fired for a day to cone 10 (about 2300 degrees f). Cooled in the kiln for three days and walla! Done.

Amazing!! I'll cherish mine even more now that I see what it takes. And this is all before glazing and firing and I don't know what all else!
