Scarf joint cut with chop saw and simple jig.

How I cut for scarf joints. Clean up the cuts with a plane or sand before gluing.

Ha ha.

I suppose you could also make a 90 degree jig and set the saw at 15.

Hey, aren't you making a weak neck, using that stick of pi...thud.

I just used this same jig trick last night to make a ramped wedge fingerboard for the theater prop violin I'm building; got the neck angle wrong during glue up, so hadda build it up. Also have some holes that need filling with glue and sawdust...

Thanks! Good tip on using the dowel.

Oh yeah, I've never tried that sawdust/sand method when glueing but I'm gonna try it tomorrow on a couple of Uke necks. I usually drill a little hole and insert a small dowel to prevent slipping.

Good tips ED. I do it similarly on a radial arm saw but follow Oily's advice and cut further down so the cutoff piece gets glued to the back. Oh Ted, I used to cut them with a handsaw along a pencil line. It's just tricky keeping the saw from wandering but is definitley do-able. I still use the handsaw method in demonstrations when I can't carry power tools with me.

Glad I can help. If you are careful, you don't need the extension stick. I've done it just with the wider piece on the table too. Slice that baby at 15 degrees, remove the chip then put the saw back to 90 and start slicing for scarf joints.

ED, yes useful...I have never done a Scarf joint cut head stock build...I hope to someday but do not have the tools to do it...beyond my abilities ....All my cutting is done using a hand hacksaw. But I will remember the angle.!!!

Drywall screws. Either that or duck tape.

How did you secure the long brace to the other wider piece? Is it glued?
