Thanks J. Rob. Thanks Uncle John. I love to play up at the lake. The grape arbor is leafing overhead now so it's a shady nook. It will become a tunnel soon. I love old songs with history too. Nice to hear Jim's story.

Cool info Jim. Glad you liked it. I have it penned by Joe W. Russel, 1936. I learned it from Dave Snaker Ray. A band mate back in art school. Koerner , Ray and Glover. I used to go see them play in Dinky Town near the U of M back in mid 60s. Then I heard the Carter family do it. I always liked it. Nice to know it was a real story.

Good job Dave! John Hardy was an actual, factual person who was hung here in WV for his crime back in 1894. The song pre dates the Carter Family but it was likely them who popularized it. The line about being baptized refers to John finding religion one day before his hanging.
