Hi Rose. This is tuned D,A,d and the dulcimer fretting omits any notes not in the D major scale. It's often called diatonic fret spacing as opposed to chromatic. On this one I have what's called the 5 1/2 fret which gives us the flatted 7th - C natural in this case. So the omitted frets are the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 8th if you compare to standard chromatic fretting. That 5 1/2 fret is where the 10th fret is usually located. There are different dulcimer spacings depending on what extra notes the player wants but on beginner instruments I stay with the major scale notes.

Hey Jim, I see the fret board is like a dulcimer. Can you explain the frets you left out on this? I have seen about 3 maybe 4 different dulcimer fret boards. Which one did you use here. And also what tuning? Thanks
