e.g. tooth picks, staples, pyrography, marker pen.......

I just burned the frets  on the neck of my canjolele, haven't played it yet. Looks cool though.

skewers, windshield wiper inserts, square toothpicks, fishing line, staples, saw lines, you name it. Skewers with a few coats of super glue or regular frets are my favorites.

Finish nails, then real fretswire.

I used finish nails on my boat paddle bass. Used the dremel cut off wheel to cut them & the same wheel as a grinder to smoothe the cut edge. shallow groove with a round file then epoxied in.
