Hi, Gary.  They are handy.  And maybe always going about a foot from the sound hole would add consistency.   I do find that my ears and the decibel meter do not agree.

  I use a similar db meter and find it to be valuable.  I put the meter about a foot from the sound hole and really wail on the strings with a pick for Max output.  I have hit 100 db and most instruments are in the 90's (acoustic).

I also have a Decibel Meter 'UJ', her name is Lynette (my partner of some 34 years), her Decibel Ratings of my Guitars are:

(1) That's Loud

(2) That's Bloody Loud

(3) Sh#t That's F#$@&%*n' Noisy!!!
