Roy, you can find out everything you want to know from this book, How to Make 9 Volt Portable Guitar Amplifiers: Build your very own mini boutique practice amp            Paperback– July 30, 2010, which you can get at Amazon.com for under $10. Easy for electronics beginners to understand, and explains everything, giving you the schematics and also where to obtain the componants you will need. Highly recommend!

Hi Roy,
Here is a good place to start
http://www.beavisaudio.com/library/LM386/LM386.htm
Starting with the smokey amp (good for electric pickups as it gives a nice overdrive as you increase volume - this also limits the volume you can get with a piezo before it gives feedback). The Dual Power King gives a higher cleaner volume so perhaps is better for piezo pickups.
You may already know but the LM386 IC comes in different Power outputs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LM386 with the cost increasing with power output, the higher powner output ones give a better result but playing around with circuits to begin with the cheaper ones will be good enough. When you start to solder up circuits use the IC socket then the heat doesn't fry the IC and also you can change between lM386 chips to compare them.
Regards,
David
Runofthegroove is also worth a look the ruby and little gem use the lm386

Hello,

This little voltage monitor is my latest project.  It can be put between the power source and the guitar effect circuit on a breadboard.  You can then adjust the voltage lower to see what your pedal circuit will sound like with a voltage lower than 9 Volts.

The write up with the link to the original article is on my blog.

Have fun.

I've been building "hack amps" for a while now, creating them by hand-wiring my own pc boards. Check out my photo albums on my page for a look at the process.

Hello,

I have been plugging away working on guitar effect circuits for a few months now.  I have had a lot of fun.

I started a blog about my builds.  If anyone is interested in learning a little more about such things go to:

Stomp Box Projects

Keep building and have fun.

Just started with this group an am inspired to give this a go, 'looks' simple but effective, and best of all, cant blow anything up, thanks for posting and the inspiration!

It says 2073D JRC K024B... Whatever the hell that means.

I've made a cute little 2 speaker amp with it and it's pretty damned loud. Here's a photo:

PKB,

What's the amp chip on that little amplifier?

Chuck Cobillas,

That's about the same plan I have, except I think with the pre-amp I'll get enough out of the piezo rod.  I'm getting signal out of my piezo rod and the sound's not too bad, it's just low.  When I take it over to my buddy's place he has to turn his tube amp (I don't remember what brand) up pretty loud to get the CBG audible.  When I plug my electric keyboard back in the same cord, if we don't drop the settings it'll blow the amp up.  Not to mention your ears.

Hey guys, I have built a few amps using this:

http://www.guitarfetish.com/Onboard-25-Watt-Guitar-Amp-Drive-a-spea...

It comes with some pretty simple wiring instructions. Word of warning: Nowhere does it list the impedance for the amp but it is 16ohm.

Anyone know of any other sets out there like this?
