I would like to know the best Piezo location for the best sound quality and why. I know there are many different opinions on this subject. I personally like to locate 2 piezo inside the bridge, this…Continue

Hi,I just tried my first rod-piezo, mounted under the saddle of the bridge. I was rather underwhelmed. The sound was just fine, a bit more mellow than my usual disc type piezo, but the volume was so…Continue

Hey guys, Looking at stuff on YouTube the other day I saw where they were making Bongo's using those five gallon water bottles. One guy was wishing he could tune his so I think I came up with an…Continue

Hi everyone.I'm building a bass ukelele (the kind with rubber strings). I have chosen a rod piezo under the saddle. I want to add a a Tillman preamp plus a tone and volume pot set up to get the most…Continue

work not wolk
Hey Wade:
I routed the bottom of the bridge so that the PU is right up against the bottom of the saddle. Maybe my passive preamp is no good, don't know. I ordered a saddle with the piezo made inside it (I know these work, use one on my acoustic bass) Thought this would be a simple build but I've got all kinds of bugs to wotk out.
Hey Bob,
Had the same problem and thought i fried or damaged the rod. If you have a lot of bridge material between the strings and the rod it will effect volume. I placed a block of wood on the box then cut the bridge down - making the rod much closer to the strings and it made a huge difference.
Hi: I used many round piezo's without any problem other than needing a volume pot to lower the volume. I'm building an acoustic style CBG with a rod piezo in the rosewood bridge under a bone saddle & a passive preamp. Have to turn the amp & preamp ALL the way up to get any sound at all. I get sound with the piezo unmounted, so am I expecting too much or is my PU too far from the strings, or ??? Thought of using a mag PU, but it ruins the looks, round piezo's work but noisey. May go with a saddle like on my acoustic bass where it's actualy the PU (expensive) Ideas & sugestions?
Wade, there will be a difference. The brass side should pick up better, you may get a more sensitive lid though also a louder cbg. The brass side is the side you should be gluing to the lid or bridge or whatever pickup design you come up with. I wonder though if putting it upside down like you are effects the sensitivity of the lid tapping, hmm. Probably not.
I've been attaching the ceramic side of piezo to the lid. I see many attach the brass side to lid. Is there a noticable difference? Much easier to glue brass side to the lid and if it sound is better, well, all the better!!!
I usually cut 2...41mm piezo disc`s[ 1 1/2" round] for my all bone bridges, but i found these 50mm ones [ 2" round ] now i only need to cut one. I cut it into an oblong shape to fit in the carved out chamber in the bone bridge for 3-4 stringers. For the 6 stringers i`ll still use 2 of the 50mm cut to fit.
Using silicone, glue the piezo to a slice of cork which is in turn glued(normally) to the inside of the box (under the bridge). Cover the top of the piezo with silicone as well. This reduces feed back greatly. :-)
I like to use 'Tarzan's Grip' an epoxy glue that deoesnt dry brittle. On smaller jobs, such as I'm working on now, a good brand double sided tape is most excellent. As the pickup is inside, it doesn't worry me that the tape looks 'out of place'.
I tried 3 piezos in the neck, but was picking up every littlt knock and bang, not to mention string noises. Eventually sandwiched each one in its own little paper envelope and things improved. Haven't followed it up, as i kinda like the sounds i have
