I will apologize beforehand if this has been covered somewhere, but the search I did didn't help. That being said...

I am thinking about using eyebolts as a "tailpiece", but it not create as sharp a break angle to the bridge as usual. My question is, how shallow is too shallow for string angle at the bridge? Obviously you wouldn't want it so loose that the bridge moves or the strings don't stay put. But is the angle from tailpiece to bridge as important as the angle from the nut to the tuners? Will it affect string tension/tuning too much to be worthwhile?

Thanks!

Then of course comes the personal preference. Haha

Like Blueshand Slim was suggesting about strings to use for targeted tuning is good.

For example: my 4 string CBG is tuned G/D/G/B and I use the 4 middle strings of a 6 string guitar set for best results: A string tuned down to G - D string tuned to D - G string tuned to G - and B string tuned to B.

If you tune down too far: A string tuned down to E or D - the strings get floppy.

If you tune too far up - they break easy or have a plinky tone.

Usually 2 to 3 whole steps up or down is the limit.

I know. And.. it won't make much difference.

The range that we are talking about will probably only differ by about 5 half tones maximum. But finding a personal sweet spot in where you want your CBG to be is more of a personal 'feel' and a matching to voice than a standard tuning.

Blueshand Slim: I thought that the longest scale Uke was 19 inches and that a set of uke strings might not be long enough to work on a longer scale CBG that is usually 23 to 25.5 inches in scale. Guess it would depend on the headstock and location of the tuners on it if it would work or not

I did manage to put a set or regular guitar strings on a 28.25 inch scale Dulcitar that I made, but it was very close.

Well, that might be fine.

If your scale length is somewhere near the same as that guitar you are referencing.

Comment by Busyhands Slim on July 6, 2016 at 12:49pm

That won't work, Fomhorach. If your CBGr's scale length is x and the guitar's is 1.25X, the strings won't sound right when tuned to those notes. I think you could capo the guitar to the same length as your CBG, though, and that might work.

Look. Just take a normal guitar, with normal strings, and pluck open strings. Find a range of sounds you hear that you would like to mess around with and choose the middle one.

It seems a bit complicated but it's the middle string you want to get comfortable with.

The higher string gets tuned 2 notes higher than normal, the lower string is similar to a guitar.

I know this is a bit wtf? but it's the flow.

Use cheap strings and you can't reach those high notes the choir boys sing in. Use middle strings then your in the 'friend zone'

Use lover strings then you better be sure you have your fretboard perfect. (Base strings wobble more).

My advise is to string it up with something. Anything. And just go for a giggle

The best thing about using 3-6 is that there's always a bunch of em around here from breaking 1 & 2.

Just sayin'
