I'm planning on a single string Bass with a 5 gallon Jeep can for the body and an old driveshaft as the neck.  Should have good acoustics and I think the neck won't flex.

Thanks Pick. I didn't even know about the bass group (or think to look for one) so I'll check there too.

Two pickups seems the way forward I agree so I'll concentrate on continuing research in that vein.

I'm thinking I might try your idea with the GHS Boomers on a three string adjustable bridge and a six string (or 4) on a 6 or 4 string adjustable bridge.

If not then I may buy three separate bass saddles like in your video. It would cut out the thickest, highest tension string and HOPEFULLY simplify the bass neck at least. Still just the idea stage at the moment.

You've been a big help so thanks very much. I may video each stage of the build this time, since I'm a bit more confident in my building of late. Kind of like a "this is how I did it" rather than a lesson though. I've got a tripod mount for the phone I video with so won't have to bug Dani to record all the time either lol.

Thanks again everyone! Much appreciated, big time.

with that  .   i believe  you would be safer with 2 necks   .. and  most likely need 2 pickups  anyway , (spacing) . ps...  only your  low  3  strings in the pack of boomers are  ( heavy / bass like ) . so that will  only give you 3 "bassy" strings.   So , your 2nd plan changes  some  things  ..

i  figure get the first one done  ... and most of  your questions will be answered  for the 2nd more involved one .

you can also scan / probe the bass group .

As duck mentions . tension is  a big issue with multi stringers and basses , which  cause a host of other considerations  .

The info  in the bass group should help you out with that. ;-)

Maybe a Tyrannosaurus thigh bone? They must be strong to hold a beastie like that up! Hmmm. Where to get a fresh one that hasn't weakened with time though? I'll look into that one.

;o)

Just thinking of a structural member in a high rise building.  Maybe you could get by with an axle out of a heavy lorry?

Steel girder with a wooden outer casing/box I think, Thomas! I don't know what iron I-beam is. Was that a joke or serious suggestion lol. Hard to understand humour online sometimes (I seem to always struggle with it at least). Is iron I-beam the same as we'd call iron lintel that goes over the top of door and window frames?

Iron I-beam neck?

I hope so too, Thomas! It's one of the puzzle pieces I still need to figure out. At this rate it might be more truss rod than wood by volume lol. I'm determined to create Frankenstein's monster though. Maybe take my time with this one. I just bought all the parts to build another first for me so I have time to think about it, research it and garner advice from all of you who are being so generous in your advice.

With 7-10 strings, I hope you are building a strong neck for that beast.

Comment by Slow Blues Dani & Ol' Grey Bear on August 6, 2017 at 5:41am
Would that way still work for the 7-10 string build, Pick? I'm definitely up for making life as simple as possible lol! Could I use the four thickest from a set of GHS Boomers and 4-6 from another pack of, for instance, 10s or 11s? Would there be a significant difference if they were all run over the same pickup, i.e would the four thickest GHS Boomers sound enough like bass strings do you think?

I really appreciate the help. Apologies if it sounded like I didn't. :o)
