Ya know...I've never looked at the bins for anything but the pieces to use as fretboards. I'm in need of building a couple CBGs, so I think I'll look in the bins FIRST for neck material this time. :)
That sounds like what am getting at Lowes. I have found that all Home Hardware's do not carry the same things (part of the joy in that chain ... if one does not have it, another might) as they all carry some third party stuff.
Yes, you do have to search the bins for straight wood. Usually I can get a 1x2x36" (3/4" x 1 1/2" dressed) that will do the job for a neck and scarf. But I have had to go up to 48" just to get straight stock.
There's a small display that has different widths(specialty too) , but their all 1/4 inch and 24 inches long. Ya really got to look for that shelf though, they tend to keep small and low to the ground. Ya they usually have a section against their back wall inside the store for all the pre cut lumber , like I said before 48" x 3/4 x 1 1/2 inshes in size....thre's always someone egar to help there. These measurements give you enough wood for the neck, the neck support and the scarf joint, all in one peice. Thats why I buy them, I find the longer pieces all crooked.
Precut blanks?? More info please. I love shopping Home Hardware... AKA the Tuesday Store .... If we don't have it, we'll get it for you. It'll be in next Tuesday.
I have never seen fretboard blanks there. Not sure what other blanks you are referring to. I do get mini drawer knobs for strap holders, and other things there. I have been getting wood at Lowes and from my friend with the sawmill.
Sorry David I didn't remember that you were in Barrie.. I know for sure that Lowe's, and Home hardware carry the pre cut blanks for sure. You can also buy pre cut fret board blanks as well.
Hope this helps.
Just at our local hardware/lumber yard...their in the speciality cut wood section in the store (well at least here they are). pre cut size is 48" x 1 1/2 x3/4.
Yes red oak will do just fine...others I tend to use is white oak, all the maples, poplar...then you have your exotic woods....there's to many to mention, but these are the more popular ones.
Quick question, I'm sure it's been covered many times, but can't seem to find any info: What wood are people using for their CBG necks? I was using some magaris from my neighbour's deck leftovers - extremely hard! - but have just bought some red oak from home depot, which is softer. Is it hard enough? I'm hoping to use it for a 3-string bass as well as 4-string CBGs.
@Will T, I am in the process of building a bass also. I went to a major guitar parts online retailer and found that they have all the dimensions listed for their Fender style Bass necks. I just pulled my dimensions from there and I am off and running.
