Go WILD. Don't fel like you HAVE to do something boring. If you have to, you can use a string tree to make your strings fall in line. There's nice examples here, just do a search for "string tree" in that little search box in the upper left corner.

Thanks much Alan! Exactly the kind of info I needed. The picture is a big help too, as I was pondering having one or two of the tuners off kilter like your top one & didn't know what other grief I might run into. I suppose I should start off first with something straightforward & simple, but I just can't help myself - taking the simple route has never been one of my strengths.

Stupid Ning won't let me edit.
In the photo, you can see my SECOND attempt. The gears are the bottom end of the tuner posts -- as the strings pull the posts TOWARD the nut, the other side gets pulled AWAY and into the worm gear. My first attempt was the other way around, with the gears getting pulled away from the worm gear. Over time, this might have caused the strings to go out of tune.

Tuners don't much care if they run clockwise or not. Get tuners BEFORE laying out final headstock, especially if you're on your first build. Make a template out of cardboard, punch holes in it for the tuners and be sure the tuners won't overlap (with 3+3, that shouldn't be as much of an issue). You want the strings to go as straight as possible from nut to tuner, or it will want to jump out of the slot. There IS a wrong way to mount your tuners, and that would be with the gear FURTHER from the nut than worm.

OK, now for my next rookie question. I'm gathering materials for my first CBG, and now looking at tuners. Some of the sets state that they're for a 3+3 setup, I assume that means half of them have a different rotation than the other for mounting to opposite sides of the headstock. Question is, do these tuners care which way the string tension is loaded (clockwise or ccw on a given peg)? Haven't figured out how I'm going to lay out my headstock yet, but didn't want to buy tuners now if it limits me on how I configure this thing. Advice appreciated!

Gomer, we had a 'show us your workspace/shop' discussion a while back. You ought to see the spaces folks build in. Mine is chaos but out of chaos...

Thanks much Wes - I have one of those saws already, was hoping it wouldn't be too thick. Appreciate the feedback on boxes too - assumed it wasn't too critical based on the wide variety of stuff I've seen. All I gotta do now is find my workbench so I can start (it's under that pile o' stuff somewhere)

MadGomer... (great name), so first off, there are no rules. That is to say specifically, build with what you got. There are many opinions [read: opinions] on box sizes. Some like em big and thick. Some like em thin and wide. It all depends on what you think you can make and how you think it might sound. I've built a great sounding box off a small H Upmann Vintage Cameroon box before tho my Macanudo Portofino Cafe box is super.

Fret tangs are usually .023-.025. If you are in the US, go to Harbor Freight and get a Japanese Flush Cut Saw. .023 kerf all for $9.
