My first build had NO ANGLE AT ALL and he tuners sat too high, so I lowered them by adding thickness to the back of the headstock with a thin sheet of walnut. I probably coud have lowered it further...

howling dick.... got a picture?.... If you have an added fretboard, you can get away with a "flat" headstock.... A slight "thinning" of the top of the headstock (needed to ac comodate the machine heads), plus the thickness of a fretboard is enough. If you are "building on the neck", then you might need to emply "string tree(s)".

best to build, then accomodate to the problems you discover, then you will know for yourself the basics of building....

later you can explore scarf joints and slotted headstocks...

the best,

Wichita Sam

Im on my first guitar and things are going reasonably to plan. Bit concerned that my headstock doesnt have much of an angle - is this an issue?

what makes a traditional banjo a banjo is the the resonating membrane. traditional banjos used a skin cover modern ones typically use some sort of plastic derivative. Also the playing style, usually "plucking" sets it apart.

stupid question of the day - What makes a banjo a banjo. Is there a specific atribute that makes a banjo a banjo.

150,000 comedians out of work, but still everyone wants to be one. Sheesh! If I don't get all these CBG parts off the kitchen counter though, I'm gonna have to ship myself to Australia before my wife kills me (witness protection program anyone?) Made the mistake of telling her I'd get it out of the kitchen if she'd clean off my workbench - she got a gleeful look & started looking up dumpster services in the yellow pages - surely that's a coincidence, right? A little fret wire & I'm ready to roll!

Wes, that's only true up here.
If he's in Australia, it will work fine. Ha, ha.

Gomer, If you put the tuners in upside down, you will wind the strings the wrong way and the notes will come out backwards.

[just kidding]
