Jeffrey - for slide playing, neck bowing isn't such a big issue. For fretted playing, then neck bowing causes a bigger problem as it raises your action, sometimes beyond the point of playability. I recently wrote a short article on neck bowing issues and possible fixes, you can find it over on www.cigarboxguitarparts.com if you're interested.

So how much bowing of the neck is tolerable... in general?

Ratbox, mine is "upside down" and I can open the box easily.

Jeff, and easy way to cover the slits would be to add a Spanish heel to the back of the neck. People see heels on acoustic guitars all the time, so they won't ask why.

It would seem that only a couple of the Macanudo's have wood tops, but all that I've seen so far have wooden bottoms. That's why I chose to use the bottom of the Crystal Cafe I posted pics of. I have built a Macanudo "Hyde Park Cafe" using the press board top and it works fine... but doesn't resonate as well. As has been mentioned elsewhere, it doesn't seem to matter as much if you're planning to play amplified using a piezo or other pickup.

Some tops are plywood and some are press board, mine was plywood like the bottom so it made no difference. The ply top can have a nicer sound. I check mine out by peeling some of the paper off on the inside of the lid.

I like your tailpieces MichaelS. I'm building this one with the stick going all the way thru in the same fashion as Jeffrey's.
Any thoughts on pros and cons of which side of the box to use for the top?

Hey Rat Box. I just built a Macanudo Crystal Cafe box using the bottom for a sound board. I looked closely at Shane's Chugger to make it. What I did was measure and draw where the neck would go, then drilled a hole and used a coping saw blade to cut out the rectangle. Then I measured the thickness of the box and trimmed the neck so I could slide it in and have it sit flush with the bottom. This does leave a slit the depth of the sound board above the neck on either side. Shane's Chugger appears to have been made in a similar fashion. I did keep the cut out bits, thinking I might cover the slit once the neck was mounted, but so far haven't felt compelled to do it yet.

I'm looking for photos of Macanudo boxes to decide how to cut holes for the neck. I'm going to use the bottom of the box for the top of the instrument. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! Want to do more simplified cbg style, "standard" & bass. Got 3 ukes to finish for my grandkids for Christmas so it will be in the new year.
