I have what i want for the body of my first build and am considering making it a resonator. Any suggestions of what i should use? Also the box may need to be reinforced.

Almost finished with my first CBG. Second is already planned. But a few questions before I start the next one. Does shape/size of sound holes effect performance? I see people doing f holes and simple circles, just a preference? also do tuning machine have a standard diameter? Eyeballing that caused some problems, mainly cosmetics. Hmmm can't think of anything else right now. After work will tighten machines, solder peizo/Jack and string it up! Anyone throw out solutions to beginner problems you had might save me down the road.

Michael,

Do you mean that the bridge appears angled across the strings? If so, it's a crude attempt to intonate and compensate for the fact that you can't get "equal" or "just" temperament on these little beasties. Unlike most electrics, which have compensated ( staggered) individual saddles that can be micro adjusted so each string can be tuned so that it sound the same note at the nut as at the 12th fret, acoustic saddles on commercial guitars may have some height and shelf staggering built into them, and may also be angled in the same way, to address this problem. Many 3 and 4-string CBG builders do the same thing for the two outside strings by angling the bridge or saddle to get those two in tune at the nut and 12th fret, and accept that the inner string(s) will be fractionally out in terms of tuning somewhere between the nut and 12th fret. It is indeed important for proper sound, if you want chords and individual notes to sound in tune. The angle can vary, depending on scale length, string diameters and tuning used. It's always a bit of a compromise.

Hi Michael,

The distance from the nut to the bridge is the scale of the instrument. The distance from the nut to the 12th fret should be half the total scale length. When you play a note on the 12th fret, it should be the same note for that string when it is plucked unfretted, but an octave higher. That is called intonation, and is necessary to ensure that the notes played at all the frets is correct. If you play slide, it is not as critical. But, if you want to play fretted, then you will adjust the bridge, closer or farther away from the nut, to get the proper notes. Sometime the bridge needs to be angled in order to get the intonation correct. Does that help?

Question: Not being a player I don't understand every detail in guitar building.  But, I am a wood worker and know enough to get by.  I notice a slight angle at times on the bridge of some guitars.  Is there a reason for this and what is the proper angle?  Is it really important to playing or sound?

Thanks

starting on my next build today with a punch cigar box and picked up some quarter inch thick craft wood, red oak to put on the fretboard.  I am going to use real tuning machines so have to find out how thick to cut the head stock to hold the tuners for when they come in.

Wish my son would wake up so I can get cranking on making this CBG.  I think I might return the tuners and make a Crow Style for my first one.  I like slide but I also want to make something fretted sometime.
