This group is for discussing the basics of CBG building for newer builders - where to start, what to do, common pitfalls, tips and techniques.
Keep in mind that new builders can find other great informative articles on CBG building, as well as most of the parts you'll need, over at C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply!

Looking for opinions on string selection... Finding the "plain" strings are too quiet, and unfortunately those were the sets I purchased for the builds i have in the works. I do have a lot of electric strings laying around too, so I have mixed and matched a bit as well and the sound is getting better switching to all wound strings, or at least two wound/ one plain. How much of a difference will going to all acoustic wound strings be? I fretted one neck on a 1x2 piece of maple without a fretboard and I am thinking of keeping electric strings on that one since the neck does bend without much effort... kind of a built in wha wha effect, but I dont think it would hold acoustic strings very well.
Searching the site for "strings" brings up way too much to sort through!
my piezo pickup is noisy with unwanted sound and quiet with the the good stuff... what's up with that? It was the stuff from Gitty in the basic electrinics kit w/o the voulume control. I mounted it to the box top somewhat close to the neck. I have another CBG that sounds awesome but dont want to make the same mistakes if I add a pickup to it.
Art,
you are asking both a functional and asthestic question. As Tom said, you need a little elevation of the fretboard above the box top. As little as an 1/8 is enough to give you the clearance you need to have a nice fast action and plenty of freeboard above the top. Many builders like it move free space between the strings and the box top, but it is not necessary.
Whether or not to end the fretboard at the box parameter or extend the fretboard onto the box top is mostly a style question. Very few builders have the need for the extra few frets that an extended fretboard offers. I've done it both ways, but looks primarily dictate choice.

You'll get a few opinions on this hear are my thoughts I always design mine so the fret board lays on top of the box for a couple of reasons. #1 you need to leave room for a bridge and if the fret board is level with the box the strings may be too close to the box and might touch it when you strum them #2 you will have to raise the strings so high, so they don't hit the box and that will make it hard to fret the strings. If you are going to make it a slide guitar a lot of what I said shouldn't mater because the strings can be higher than fretted guitars without a problem. Look at pictures of other builders for ideas good luck... tc
I am building my first Fretted CBG. My question is should the top of the fret board be level with to top of the cigar box, and should the should the end of the fret boar stop at the edge of the cigar box.

Thanks for the kind welcome Chuck, I did join the Uke Group. I really enjoy playing uke, but...I'm a big fan of Delta Blues and I want to learn slide. I think that means steel strings and therefore I want to give a 3-string CBG a try. My first question involves the old brass clock face in this photo. Do you think I could use it like a resonator cone on my CBG build? It is 6.25" in diameter.
