Thanks. I've worked out that the loose peg was actually caused by a loose screw secururing the button. I have it tuned now. Next job is to try to balance the tension ring. The velum has a bit too much wear at the back by the saddle. And the tension ring is really unbalanced across the the skin.

Hi there, I've worked on some banjoleles and in fact still have one. You tune just like a ukulele - that's re-entrant tuning in G,C,E,A.

It isn't a CBU, but I've just bought a Banjo Uke, very old, and need some advice for tuning, playing etc.

Is this the right place. I'm normally found over in the brits and 3 string section.

George, it looks like you're making a uke. (I'm a bit slow...) There's 4 different sizes of ukes: standard (13-14" scale), concert (14-15"), tenor (16-18"), and baritone (20-24"). The standard is most common, but if you are just starting out learning to play, I recommend the tenor. It has a nice wide neck that makes fingering easier for a beginner, and you can put a larger box on it for a fuller sound. Plug the size you want into the StewMac calculator and crunch the numbers.

George, books have been written on the topic of fret location....
But if you want to know where to put the frets on your instrument (what is it anyway?). Do you play an instrument; you probably want frets in the same position that you are used to. Otherwise, there are several industry standards. For guitars, there's the Fender 25.5" strat/telecaster for example. Gibson has a lot of "industry standards."
