first bass build

Hey folks.  Thinking of building a CBG bass and I have a question or 2. Does it matter what kind of magnetic pickup I put in it?  I mean is there one specific for basses?  Also, does the 3 or 4…Continue

....the only reason i'm making a big "to-do" about this is my tuners lock and are difficult to change, so i'm looking to settle on something. photos would expain, just do't have any yet.

Thanks all.

comments/questions:The bass player in my church choir (I sing bass, 17 years) said standard tuning was GDAE  ??

I do have Frets.

Where's Uranus: thanks for explaining GDG, but is it decent, or should I change to one of these others ?

Oh and GDG is root fifth octave ;)

Sorry, high school music training kicking in. I could have said frets, but I wasn't sure if you  had them. Standard bass tuning, each string is tuned to the fifth fret of the previous string, a fourth. Concert tuning it's the seventh fret, a fifth. The octave is the twelfth fret.

Because I tend to play solo, mainly because theres not many buggers round here, my tendency would be to tune the first string low,the next string an octave up, and the final string a fifth above that. That would give you a bass and powerchord set up. I'd figure on a 28  - 32" scale.

I hate to say it, but the answer to your original question is: "it depends."

If we knew the scale or the type of sound you're going for, we could probably fine tune the answer (no pun intended!).

For a 3 string bass, I would go (low to high) EAD or ADG, just like a "regular" bass. That way you can just buy a standard pack of strings.

I built a 2-string bass uke (20" scale) and used the middle 2 strings (AD) from a pack of Aquila Thunderguts.

Thank you. You lose me with the deep stuff, you are surly gifted with the knowledge of music theory. ( "Octave - Fifth - Octave" ) OY. My bass is tricky to tune, I'll post photos soon as I get a chance to take them. Anything that starts with a G? I'm using flat wound , think the top is 110 or close. Tuned now to GDG.

What he said.

Open tuning means the strings form a chord when open (unfretted), you can do that with bass, but it can sound muddy, you could try something like root - octave - fifth, wher the first two strings are an octave apart and the third is a fifth above the second, say DD'A'

Normal basses are tuned in fourths eg EAD, concert instruments are tuned in fifths (I believe) eg DAE but do whatever sounds good to you, especially if you aren't playing with another instrument thats tuned.

I think 3 string bass would be EAD/432 strings from a regular bass set?

Comment by Daniel Walter on April 14, 2015 at 9:40am

C'mon, Where's Uranus, I need a suggestion for non-open tuning, since you commented that open may be odd for a bass.

Thanks WU. How about regular tuning for a three string bass?
