Hey folks.  I'm just about finished with my next build, which is basically a 23" scale acoustic bass with weed whacker string.  It started out to be a U-bass but the tuners and the strings proved to…Continue

Questions about my first build

Hey folks. Just finishing up my first CBG. I'm pretty happy with it but it's got an issue or two. First of all what does it mean that it gets sharper up the neck? The notes are not getting…Continue

"I was able to get the E with .095 string but it was a little loose. I changed to .130 and I worked much better. The G I got with .050 string. So I got it working and I took it all apart so I could stain it. Hopefully I'll have some finished…"

"I tried to build a Ubass also. 21.5" scale. I used .095 for the E string without any trouble (I guess it's an octave higher than a real bass, but it worked). Trouble was that I couldn't get the high G string up to that note, even with…"

"That short 23" scale is gonna be tough to get down to standard bass frequencies. Even on my 39" scale bass I ended up using plastic coated wire clothesline from WalMart  to get decent tension on the low E. I think your idea of going…"

Weed whacker string gauges

Hey folks.  I'm just about finished with my next build, which is basically a 23" scale acoustic bass with weed whacker string.  It started out to be a U-bass but the tuners and the strings proved to be more than I wanted to deal with. So I'm testing out some weed whacker string and it's going great except for the E string.  I tried using some .105 trimmer string and it was just so floppy at the E note I couldn't keep it on the nut or bridge...not to mention it had no sound.  So my question is…See More

"After trying many different 4-string tunings I have settled on DGBD/DGBE as my standard setup. This gives you a great open tuning that can be tuned up to DGBE (same as guitar high strings). It also means that you have access to chord charts online…"

"Many songs played in open G totally ignore the top (6th) string anyway. Since you still have a proper Open G tuning, things sound pretty normal to me."

"Consider an Open tuning such as Open G (DGBD) which would be the lower four strings from a six string tuned to Open G. That would mean that a lot of 6-string tabs would be usable (just forget the two bass strings). There are a lot of free tabs for…"

need suggestions on tuning

Hey all.  I'm currently building my wife a 4 string guitar and I'm trying to figure out what strings from a 6 string set to use and what tuning to use.  The guitar is basically a 4 string tenor guitar with 23" scale.  She has no experience playing but she would like to get a song book and try to teach herself.  But I'm not sure what tuning to use to make that easier on her.  I considered tuning like a tenor guitar/banjo (CGDA) because there are a number of books she could use to learn how to…See More
