Hey folks. Thinking of building a CBG bass and I have a question or 2. Does it matter what kind of magnetic pickup I put in it? I mean is there one specific for basses? Also, does the 3 or 4…Continue

Just introducing myself from across the pond. Built a 4-string cigar box guitar now tackling a bass. Having great fun in learning and being able to practise skills required. Didn't realise how much…Continue

It's just a piezo to volume and to jack so far. I have a 1meg and a 500k pot, just wanted to know what people were using for bass. Had a magnet pickup inside the tin(it's a rezo-bass cookie tin), but that made the entire box into a pickup.
I added a piezo to a guitar with 2 single coil pickups, 5-way switch, volume, tone and jack. The singles were completely quiet.
just putting this out there: adding a piezo or more (on/off switch, just join neg/pos to the jack) to any magnetic pickup system really quiets everything down, when the piezo is on. it's a mystery. just add a disc or two, no need to make it complex.
500K pot value is fine for bass or guitar. usually 500K for humbuckers and 250 K for single coil. personal preference, just 500K pots chop off some higher frequencys.
magnetic or piezo? how is it wired now?
If I use a piezo, what is the best value pot to use for a volume pot?
It's a good question since you have to deal with the impedance issue.
Also, does anyone have any good schematics for adding a passive tone circuit for bass?
ok bass people. nobody has ever responded, but i'll give it another shot.
i'm redoing a 3-string bass i made a while ago. (on my page).
my pickup ring was just a bit crooked, can't handle it. bass sounded great as it was.....
so, it's been a while. do i use the first three strings, not the lowest? or opposite? what tuning would be good? has anyone tried the new NY-XL strings? any recommendations for other strings? i'd love to have it sound as good as when first made. thank you. (ps....on my early builds i'd fill the cigar box with hardwoods and glue them tight. mistake for wanting to make a change, but solid).
It's a matter of taste, and playability.
Generally the strings are a little closer at the nut, and a little wider at the bridge, but they don't have to be. I'd suggest looking at some company that makes after market parts and getting the dimensions from their parts.
Likewise generally the strings are a little higher at the bridge, because the fingerboard doesn't meet the body flush, it's usually 6-8mm above it, but this is all for playability, so will depend on your neck, you'll need to adjust the string height at both ends, depending on how much neck bow you have and how big your frets, if you have them, are, to avoid buzzes.
So that said, it's probably best to build the neck and body first, and then adjust to suit.
