Hi Everyone,

First time here, I want to build a cigar box guitar but I don't even know which box to begin with.... Where I live it a little hard to get cigar boxes unless at a garage sale or thrift store but those come pretty banged up. I found a few on etsy, I really liked this website: https://www.etsy.com/shop/BnBTobacco?ref=profile_shopicon but it looks fairly new and I'm not sure which boxes I need to start with. In your opinion, which ones were the best to start, what are your favorites boxes, and I guess any other wisdom you'll like to leave for me.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks Wes Carl,

I'll take a look at the plans online. Was there any plans you enjoyed making or might be easy for a beginner?

Thanks for the tip, yeah I like this seller better than the others cause I know which cigar boxes I'm going to be get.

Elizabeth --

Google cigar stores in your area.  If there are none close by, maybe there is one close enough for a day trip.

I have picked mine up at cigar stores for $2 max.  Usually, the money goes to their year end party.

It's always good to hang out with the guys at a cigar store.  They are interested in what you are doing and could be potential customers.

As far as boxes, I am partial to the Tabak Toro boxes.  They are black/gold and a good size.  They have great resonance.

I like wood over cardboard.  Not sure there is any big difference.  I just like them better.

That's what's cool about going to the cigar store.  You can touch and feel the box.

Hope this helps.

My first buy I was lucky and the cigar shop had a nice Undercrown box he sold me.  The second time he was busy and pointed to the pile and said they were $3 each.  I bought several based on size and cool factor only to find out half of them were particle board with super thick tops.  So my advise is - find a real cigar store, they will probably sell boxes, and look for ones that are real wood and of the size you want.  Any box will work ok but the wood ones are better in my opinion.  Occasionally there are a few on craigs as well.

I get mine from a local cigar/smoke shop. I wander in once in a awhile and see what they have. Sometimes there are only a couple crummy boxes, other times it's  a gold mine. I also have to make sure that the one lady is working that day. She likes to keep dropping the price ($2-5) a box as long as I keep getting more. I pretend like I don't need that many (and I probably don't) but my pulse quickens with each box I grab.

Those Padron boxes are 2nd to none for a small cbg, usually great sound

I like the other Darryl like the Padron boxes. Yhey are great acoustically and with pickpus. I've used coil & piezos eith great results. They are popular where I'm at so I grab them when ever I can. I live in S.W. florida so there are good tobacco shops all around me with boxes. An increase in popularity has made selection a little thin but I do ok.

Cool, I'll definitely look out for the padron boxes. Thanks for the tip.

So here's what I did.  I figured I was in this this for a while so I talked to a local cigar shop owner.  I worked out a deal.  I built him a git for unlimited free boxes!

I made a nice little git and plastered his logo on it.  I figured it would drum up some business.

The money they charge for boxes ($2/box) goes to a local church so I am not too concerned if they charge me.

Today I was in the store and the owner came in.  I reintroduced myself.  "All boxes, no charge!" he told the clerk.  I was set.  I walked out with 11 boxes including two Padron's!  I took a couple of small boxes for parts but I think I did o.k.  I did donate $5 to the box fund.  ;)

Never hurts to ask.

I hear you, man.

I used to work for a DoD contractor.  We made a lot of stuff.  Some good.  Some bad.  Some that would break things and hurt people.  (Not so good.)

 Hi Alan,

Nice hookup you got there, nice work on the g's too :D

If you don't mind me asking, could you give me info on how you made the 3 hole tuner set-up? That looks really cool, I'd like to try that. Did you use a certain tuner?

Mudroc...

Thank you for the kind comments!

Basically, the tuners I used were acoustic tuners.  If you check Amazon they are 3 on a plate.  They mount from the side.

In a normal guitar, the opening for the strings is one long slot. You really need a scarf cut for that so I cheat and use three holes.  I fret each hole to prevent the strings from digging into the wood.

It's simple, easy and gives a pretty cool look.
