You don't really need a fretboard, but if you make a one-piece neck you should take care that the bridge is positioned low enough that the strings aren't too high for playing.

Like Thorsten says, you don't want the fingerboard flush with the box lid, it needs to be raised up a bit. Somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 inches, or 3 - 5 mm.

Yep, you don't have to have a separate fret board, but it does make for some nice extra playing space between the strings and the box. Also gluing on the extra piece makes the neck stronger since it is then a laminate construction.,

Fender has been building on the neck for decades. (Maple Tele's and Strat's).  It's has more to do with how the neck sets up to the box.  It is easier to get the neck/box setup right with a fret/finger board with a seperate fret board.
