Hey peoples, been looking around for a suitable vice for making my CBG necks, the variety is enormous. I was thinking two normal vices, but that's a bit overboard.I don't have a lot of room to work so I was thinking a simple drill press vice attached to my table would suffice, or even the guitar vice on the stew mac website, could anyone recommend something?

Regards

Brett

I have the same question, so I will be interested in the answers. I want something I can temporarily hook to my WorkMate.
Well, bring you're in Australia, I don't know if you can get this but I use this. We have a store called Harbor Freight. They might ship or if you know of someone in the US.

I Googled a bit, and I think I am going to get this one, Cheap and easy.

One like this would do the job and clamps to the tabe, low cost.
Cheers Ron.
I admit I just use a standard bench vise which I render "safe" with blocks of wood or "L" section trim pieces when necessary. Not the best but I get along.

When I'm doing serious wood removal from necks I just clamp the whole thing on my deck hand-rail with carpenter's clamps.
I've found building and playing cbg's quite a good vice. If you're looking for a vise, however, be careful about Harbor Freight. We have one here in Western New York, and much of their stuff is cheap Asian-imports of questionable quality. Now, I'm not saying that just because something is imported from Asia, it's junk. But when it comes to tools, I want to hold it and examine it first.
I like this type of vice because the one jaw floats and will fit a tapered neck perfectly. I am sure there are other brands that have the floating jaw at a fair price. Cheers Bob

Looks handy Bob, where can we grab these online? amazon is all out ;( Brett PS: nevermind found this one:

I don't have a lot of room either, so I went with the truley portable option of the Triton Superjaws.

There's a newer type on the market now by Rockwell

I use it for everything and everywhere. I've even found myself building more jigs to fit it then for my workbench.

I use double sided sticky tape to hold down my necks to work on them. Not a long strip, just a couple of short strips will do.

I sometimes use this vise though:
