A standard 1x2 works fine.

It's a personal choice, but I've just made a 4 string neck, works out 42mm (1 5/8 inches wide), overall string spacing 32mm (1 1/4inches) at the nut.

I've always managed ok with 1.5" neck width for 3 string and 4 string guitars, works for both. (-:
