Consider using standard medium gauge guitar strings DGBE and tune open G (DGBD). Tune the high E down to D.

if you have no truss rod, i've had great luck using the ADGb srings out of an light set of strings, tuned too GDGb(open G)

. the gauges are A .036 D.030 G .022W B .014.
i've had no banana necks, and great sound so far. hope that helps!

I use the top 4 from a set of 10's and tune to open E (EBeF#). So that's around an 18 to 42ish. No truss rod, no issues so far. I've also used the middle 4 from a set of 13's... but same difference. Depends on if I want bronze or nickel. Oh... I build a 24.75" scale for those gauges. Fender scale, I would go a tad lighter.

It may depend on the tone you want as well.  I like the heavy sound for slide on a couple and use the big 4 strings.

42 on down is where I start sometimes a 47 tuned DAda (or DADF#) or sometimes EBeb. 

 On some I like the open power G- GDGd and use the middle 4.  Many different similar tunings are out there.

 I love to play around with different strings.  john
