I want to make a canjo(e) so I can make custom labels for the cans but have never seen one close up - Is there a bridge in the can that the string goes over that holds the can down on the stick? Any helpful comments are appreciated - D Brooker

Hi Dennis,
The only up close pics/footage I have seen has the string thru the bottom of the can - no bridge. I guess there are a number of ways to construct it. There is a fella (Sam Canjo - I think?) selling a book for a few bucks on ebay at the moment. It apparently gives instructions how to build a Canjo. I have also seen a few clips on YouTube, although they are not always titled Canjo.
cheers, Andrew O'Grady
Yeah, you drill a hole in the bottom of the can and run the string through it - the section of the can bottom beneath the string becomes the bridge. That way the string effectively vibrates the can.
Thanks to both of you gentlemen - I shall see what I "can" come up with - Once I get something done I'll post a photo - Best regards - Keep it in tune - D Brooker
Here some info that might help.

This seems like more of a dulcimer with a tin can resonator than an canjo. Intriguing design, nonetheless.

All, I have made Google SketchUp plans for a canjo based on the plans I saw from the Herschel Brown video and the jpeg plans below. They are going to be posted on my page and are freely available. Please visit the page to get the file. You must have the freely available Google SketchUp to open the file with.

they moved and the vid is no more

If anybody's interested, I have a slideshow  tutorial for $ 4... gives the basics... plus you get a "How to Play" and a song book too... email me at wichitasam@yahoo.com and paypal me at the same address and I'll get you set up pronto... thanks,  WS

You might want to check out the Cigar Box Nation (CBN) discussion group called the "Can Jo Consortium" . I also have this diagram I did a year ago:

Canjos and diddly bows are good places to start learning how to build and play stringed instruments. Good luck with all your builds...
