I use light spray of rattlecan clear acrylic lacquer. Put it on in very light mistings as otherwise it can soak in places and cause darker blotches.  One light misting and a couple of medium coats is enough to seal it, but you can build-up the finish as much as you like.

I have heard you can also use decoupage medium, but I have never tried it. Like John says, you want to make sure you don't have any dark blotches where it soaked in. You might try your technique on a test box first before you try it on the finished product.

The ink on the paper could also run when sprayed with a finish with a very strong thinner.  Spray the finish on by misting it very very lightly and let it dry for five to ten minutes between coats until you build up a shiny coat of finish.
