Anyone ever use brass screws for fret markers?  I'm thinking it would work just fine and would be a heck of a lot easier than some type of insert.

brass screws work just fine but a drill press is crucial to get a consistent countersink.
Agreed. If it's done right, a series of flathead screws could look delicious...

Once you have it sunk, you may want to fill it over with some sort of clear epoxy.  You could have string bending issues otherwise.  I'm just guessing, though - I could be totally wrong.  For the people who have actually done this: have you ever had an issue with strings getting hung up on the screw head during a bend?

I like using bamboo skewers. I have a bit that is perfect. Drill a hole, dab in a spot of glue, twist in the skewer, cut flush with the fretsaw. But I only do sidedots .... a clean, plain fretboard is kinda my thang. Plus, you get hundreds, maybe thousands of markers for a couple of bucks.

And I have also used the screws ... works fine as long as you heed the advice above.

Can you show a pic please , of the bamboo frets ...I'd be thankful
Great idea.  I like it.

Photo is to dark but I used them on my fret board.  There is a steel tube below them so they are just glued in.  I used smaller ones on the side of the neck too.  I liked it.

Lots of different head styles, too, crossdrive, square drive, hex drive, others.  Can't see brass being a prob, wears at about the same rate as the rest of the fretboard.

Josh,

I've done 5-6 using brass pan head screws for position markers and didn't have any trouble with string interference.  But, they were all fretted.... Don't know about fretless, but I think panheads as opposed to woodscrews would be problem free.

About to try using countersunk brass screws as position markers on fretted 3 string.

I don't have a drill press!

The epoxy thing sounds do-able. Low budget anyway. just a regular electric drill ( cumbersome! ) and a countersink bit.

I have done this now using the epoxy. Looks good! Made sure the neck sat flat with spirit level so epoxy dried flat. Got a little bit of epoxy smear around the area as this glue was not as runny as i would have liked, fine sandpaper after around it cleared this up. Use epoxy that dries fairly slow.

Will post pictures later on.
