I found this YouTube video to be pretty interesting. Thought I'd share.

ALL stuff VIBRATIONS TRAVEL TREU !! THAT YOU  CAN OR WILL USE IN A BUILD !

what effects tone?   Everything

Hi, an interesting video he put a lot of work into it. To my old ears, the changes in tone in most cases were very subtle. I started to listen with my eyes closed and could hear no difference. It wasn't until I looked up and saw the captions that indicated a swap over, that I could hear minor changes. Not every time but often.

I was told once by a top pickup manufacturer that installing his pickups in a guitar I had just built would not give a satisfactory sound, due to the timbers I had used and was installing them into. Go figure. As I said, old ears.

Many points could be discussed here, but as Poorness Studios pointed out in another post, often best done over a beer.

Would have been interesting to see tests done with the pickup floating free of the instruments. I don't remember that being tried. Also, the effects on sustain would have been interesting.

Everything in the guitar and the the person playing it

a more pertinent question is what kills tone ?

my vote for #1 is those disc piezos...lol

I'm curious Tim why you feel disc piezos kill tone.

They certainly seem to be widely used.

Happy Thursday

Bill

Hi Tim, good question..long answer. Depending on,  if one is talking about acoustic or electric guitars.

The short answer is, as already used above, everything on the guitar. But that does not tell you a lot about the what, when, why's how's, and if's.

Another question might be what is tone, what is a good tone, how does one describe the tone?

There are as many things/materials that affect tone as there are ways of describing it.

Bass Treble Mid's, muddy, bright, glassy, thick, thin, fuzzy, earthy, warm, dry.....I'll leave it there.

Cheers Taff

Okay, I'll be the smart aleck.

Tone is in the ear of the beholder.  :)

Oke ! if we are getting corny on this one! then the fraze is :"what effects Tone ",  well that el be the turning of the "TONE knob !! my dear friends and CBG Lovers, builders players and general  Geniuses!

the discs are popular because they are cheap and easy to use.

Just my opinion but they sound terrible. too sensitive every touch of the guitar makes a noise and they are trebly harsh sounding quacky... if thats what you are after then great. not my cup of tea.

Hi Tim, you are right in some respects with your feelings about piezo disc transducers and the sound they produce. However, not all discs are created equal. The ones sold and used for CBG use are, as you point out are cheap. To get any-way near a  decent sound takes some effort, and can include modification and placement knowledge, as well as pre-amp selection. Good quality [read expensive] disc piezo transducers do not have the extent of issues you mention.

I have used K&K systems for many, many years in the full-size guitars that I build. That's three discs placed directly under the bridge, inside the guitar. Most methods of amplifying an acoustic instrument have limitations. The best way to amplify an acoustic guitar, and still get an acoustic sound, is with a microphone, but that comes with issues too.

I don't know if this will work...
