Bike spokes come in different grades. Cheapest (like you find on WalMart bikes) are pretty soft steel and easily cut with a nipper.
The best are tough stainless steel and can be a bit harder. The nipples are actually pretty cheap, they come in brass, steel, and aluminum alloys.

I use #4 washers or nuts sunk in on the bottom. And i cut in a cotter pin in front of the exit holes above.

Ive inset the brass ferrules from the end of strings, they look cool and clean. Ive also found .25 brass allthread at home depot for bridges.I spin them in my drill with steal wool then carve a little cradle to seat it. I think its a cool look

Another solution.... try your local 'craft' shop or haberdashery - the kind that sell beads, zips etc. Ask 'em for 1/8 inch eyelets, and your sorted. They come in many sizes, colours, shapes... and I just picked up a hundred for £2 :o)
