hi everyone.

i'm about to start my first cbg. i want to make a 4 string and need one bit of advice, and that it what is a good size piece of timber to get for the neck. i see the measurements like 1/2 etc.. does that mean 1 inch by 2 inch? it's all metric system down here but it's easy for me to convert it, i'm just not sure what the 1/2 means...

if anyone can clear this up for me it would be rad!

thanks,

stevo

I found 1 inch x 2 inch x 6 feet long poplar (without knots) at my local store. It's easy to start with materials that I do not have to modify much. Carving the head and the recess for the cigar box cover was hard for me. I do not have many tools.
Your standard 1" x 2" (which is 3/4" x 1 1/2") was a lil thin for me when I started building 4 strings. If you have a tablesaw you can buy lumber from a lumber specialty store that sells boards closer to true 1" thickness and you can rip them to the width you need. My 4 strings are usually about 7/8" by 1 5/8" the extra 1/8th inch seemed to work out close to a taylor string spacing. If I was building my 4 strings fretless i probably wouldnt have worried about the extra 1/8". However the thicker neck helps with warping and helps to avoid string trees.
thanks for the advice and for clearing that up for me guys!

i guess trial and error will be the best lessons i can get, i just need to get me going. i have some tools and i got a few more today that will help me. i'm going to start on the neck tomorrow. hope it goes ok,heh!

thanks again for the help!

Best of luck! Remember: there are No Rules to CBGs so build as you can with what you have available.
