The last thing I want to do is take anything away from the folks on here who sell quality pickups.  But I stumbled across some of this stuff on ebay and wondered if anyone has ever tried it.  Is it Cheap? Junk? or both?

6 string pickup pre-wired with volume and tone controls.  "Noiseless" uh huh.....lmao.....sorry, just thinking, does that mean "silent".  But for $7.50 including shipping, I can't buy the pots and caps at Rad Shack for that.

And the next contestant, for $2.75 including shipping from hong kong:

I have to ask, when $20 can get a hand full of pickups to play with, are they worth messing around with? or complete junk?  I mean, for the price, you could "let the blue smoke out" and not care.

Which brings up another point, I understand all electronics need blue smoke inside of them in order to work.  Some time back, I let the blue smoke out of a pre-amp that I wired wrong and now it doesn't work.  Can you buy after market blue smoke? and if so, how do you get it "back in"??? :P

Gotta use a bong hooked to a talkbox to get that magic smoke back in. Ya I bought one of `em pickups works well 4 the price not a whole lota` windings got mine grand total 6 bucks. I`m happy with it
Wow, those are cheap. I can see why you're tempted. The description for #1 sounds like it belongs to another pickup. I can't see any active/passive switch or adjustable pole pieces. Hopefully it's shielded like they say, but who knows.

The jack looks really thin and cheap. Those are what usually wear out first.

You might be able to exchange the ceramic magnet for an alnico one and get it sounding a little better.

#2 looks like more or less the same pickup minus the fancy surround and the circuit. That one doesn't sound like it's shielded.

Anyway, they'd probably be fine just for making some noise and playing around with exchanging magnets, rewinding, etc.
Yep i'd say the same as Skeesix the description sounds like it's for some other pickup as far as i can make out it's a regular six string fixed pole pickup with a cheap magnet , also as skeesix said it will make a sound and do the job - myself i dont care for fitting six string pickups to either three or four string guitars i think they look out of place but thats just my opinion and thats why i started making my own
i've seen a few guys on here use these style pickups some love em !
give one a try it's not a great amount to loose if you dont like it
I tried one of the prewired pickups on a four stringer once and was quite pleased with the results. Initially there was some noise when adjusting the volume pot but after twiddling it for a while the noise disappeared. I mounted the pickup under the box top and fitted a steel bar sitting on the magnets and projecting through the top to finish under the strings. You can hardly go wrong at less than $10 a time.

Cheap pickup mounted under box top.
John,

Really nice build. This is sort of a segue, but I've been looking at trying to do something like that, but I was figuring on little button magnets on the top, I have several NdFeB "thumbtacks", 1/8" diameter x 1/8" thick. Do you think these would do it? be better? not as good? or is there something better about bridging it with a bar?
The bar works really well with a 3 string where you don't have to worry about placing the strings directly over a pole. Here's another one of mine which uses the same idea. This time a 3 string.

The pickup used in this one is one of a P-Bass pair, again mounted under the box top. pi_r_squared said:

Hi John, what kind of pot do you use for tone and volume ? how much K ? your builds look great, thanks for sharing the idea of the steel bar, I will try to find what is working best but I'm not sure I can find steel bars so easily :-S
Yes John , thanks for sharing that. Having the pu under the top is perfect it seems, sure keeps the top looking clean and more "authentic" somehow. I'm tempted now to try that with a cut nail as the bar. That should work too you think?
I guess I 've always been scared off my these when I see the part about having to pay import taxes and customs fees. Does this really get to your door in the US for 7.50? If so, count me in!
John, I guess I could just message you about this, but other people might wonder, unless I'm the only one who does't know.

What are the ferrules? trim rings? you use around the holes?

Seems they have to be some common Home depot, or Napa Auto parts Item, but I can't picture what it is.

Sorry, this is a little bit off topic here.
I have the cheap $2.75 in my WD40 diddley bow. Sounds good for 3 bucks and a week or so of wating. I thought about using it for aother build soon. They are microphonic which means they will pick up your voice, and when you get it in the mail it will have all kinds of cool hong kong writing all over it.
so it's NOT a magnetic pickup? it's just a microphone that looks like a magnetic pickup?

or am I missing something?
