Vintage RCA Victor Animatograph conversion to guitar amplifier

I discovered this beautiful vintage amplifier online recently...for $50. It came in a carry case with a power cord and a unique accessory that looks like a transducer microphone of some sort for recording.

Not too much information about the amplifier, except that it appears to be an external amplifier for a 16mm film projector from 1930-1940's.

I plan on converting it into a guitar tube amplifier head.

Do a search for some amp forums, someone's bound to have info on it somewhere or can give some insight.

"audible laughing in background..."

Sorry to keep you in suspense Ron.  I did get a reply from U of I, but they did not specify exactly if their documentation was for this unit. Rather, they indicated that they have a user manual & schematics for the 16mm projector. I think I need to write back to get a verification before spending the money for copies of the document(s), which can be anywhere from $10-100, depending on how many pages there are.

Considering that this technology is obsolete and the type of film with recordable magnetic strip is now deemed "an environmental and health hazard", it seems that it's intended purpose is no longer viable.

Except for the chance that some of the capacitors and/or resistors have drifted out of spec, it is a complete and likely working unit as is.

So, I am inclined to modify it into a lunchbox tube amp head...maybe.

That huge silver-encased piezo is exactly that, a microphone. The Magnesound mic was used to record outside sound onto the film; it appears to have been developed for the home movie recording market, which bloomed during the post-war 50's tech revolution.

It'd be interesting, if possible, to take the mic apart to see how it was constructed.

Paul, there is only a serial number (#1205) on lower front.

I contacted the University of Iowa as suggested by Ron "Oily", and they have the documentation, for $10-15.

I also discovered what this exactly this kind of thing was used for. It is an external audio source for 16mm film projectors, and can play phonograph or microphone input directly into the audio signal section of the projector film (this is what the oddball attachment that looked like a huge silver encased piezo is).

What's the Model number Scott? I'll see if I can find any info.

Nice looking amp. If it has the paper capacitors in it then I would replace them. If you have a variac it would be good to bring up the voltage slowly to charge up the caps. Hope it works good for you.

Thanks Ron, the link to that schematic is a good start. The U of I link as well is very helpful. I had seen that online, and will investigate. Cheers, and best wishes.

OK, that amp is from the early 50's, no earlier than 1952, when the Victor Magnesound was first introduced.

I'd suggest contacting the University of Iowa to see if they have any schematics or records of this amp in their collection:
