This is the design I'm going with and the diamond plate would cover the bottom of the box.  

I've never worked with diamond plate before so I don't know the difference of thick vs. thin.  I was thinking of just painting a 1/8" hobby board black to match the ebony fret-board, but I think diamond plate would add a nice look (though i don't know how/if it would affect sound quality.

Are there places to buy diamond plate to a specific dimension?  Else, it seems you need specialized tools to cut.

Awesome idea.  Assuming it's the same size as the top no cutting should be required!

Diamonds are not for plates.

Diamonds are for the soles of your shoes.
