Lol. Like I said I think my thinker is broked. My biggest problem was stopping believing in Peter Pan. Now Tinkerbell is sick and my imagination is pushing up daisies. Taser into a pickup you say? I'll think on that some more. Thanks again for helping. It is definitely appreciated.
I'm going to use six a side tuning pegs so it's quite a long headstock at 18 cms. Just for extra info.
Do you think it would still be okay if I put one either side from the nut down rather than the top down? Wondering how I would get the tuning pegs on and turning otherwise. I've nearly finished thining the headstock already so don't want to mount them to the two side sticks/cues.
See, this is where you guys rock. Every time I ask for advice you all come up with awesome suggestions and I'm more and more convinced that my thinker is broked. Either that or my imagination needs a service. Putting one either side sounds very doable and I think it would look pretty cool too. One fat handle and a snooker cue either side. Winner winner chicken dinner. More options than I can shake a stick at now. Choosing whether to make a four or six string ain't going to be easy but the solutions should be no problem thanks to yourself and Thomas.
Thanks for helping. Now if you could give me an idea where I can get my thinker fixed and my imagination overhauled I'd be set!
Very true Thomas. I have another handle from a broom we bought for use as a hand held scrubbing brush. It's much thinner though. Also got two snooker cues. I chopped the pointed ends off the snooker cues to use as home made drum sticks but should be long enough still. They're all different thicknesses to the handle I'm working on so not sure how they'd look. Could maybe mount it underneath the neck handle I'm working on now if it's for added strength? Could be an option. I might have a rethink and use this neck for a three or four string to reduce that string pressure and get two matching handles for a six string after the advice given here. Probably a four and reduce the pressure more by tuning open G and missing out that top thickest string? Is there an open or drop tuning that would be better/less string tension by tuning down or using the thinnest strings? The more I think about it the more I'm convinced I'm going to take the advice and make use of the experience of yourself and Wayfinder. Besides, I haven't got a four string and have been thinking about one for a while now. I appreciate the help.
You could still use two handles, even if they weren't alike. Just artificially "age" the newer of the two to match the vintage of the older one. It could give a good "made do with what was available" look to the instrument.
Thanks for replying Wayfinder. Not too late to use two handles but it's from a used, old garden tool handle so finding another the same shape and particularly patina to match would perhaps be difficult. I've seen a similar usage by Seasick Steve on his hubcap guitar so hoping it might be okay. Hoping. If not then I'll get two new necks next time around and hopefully reuse the body and/or electrics. Never thought about a horizontal piece of wood for the nut. Makes sense though and I can secure the horizontal piece well too which should avoid the lean. Great idea. Thanks again for helping out.
Sorry, I meant to say a simple bolt would probably LEAN over on the bass side. Not lead.
Nearly finished cutting down the headstock thickness on a broom handle neck and got to thinking. I want to make a six string guitar out of it but don't know the best way to put a nut on it. Being six string and a pole neck wouldn't a simple bolt lead over on the bass string side due to string pressure? I'm using the handle from a garden hoe/lawn edger. It's 28mm thick at the end tapering down to about 24mm,perhaps 25mm, so should be strong enough for the six strings. I hope. Any ideas on the best way to attach the nut? Any suggestions on hardware I can search for on the good old eBay that would make things work? I considered a hose clamp but which would work for a diddley bow, maybe a chugger, but probably wouldn't work for a six string. Help appreciated and thanks in advance.
That's something else that fits perfectly into the typical category Paul.
Michael I'm not sure how I'm going to do things yet. Not exactly anyway. I just plan on winging it as usual haha. The neck will stop short of the pet bowl though and then come out of the other side for an appearance of a through stick and for a tail piece. I know I'll need to have internal bracing but have no experience of bracing. I'm preparing by watching lots of YouTube videos and thinking about how I can adapt what I learn from them to fit my own needs. It's going to be interesting and likely frustrating too but since I'm already bald there's no danger of pulling my hair out at least. Unless it's beard hair. I've already had one beard related disaster this week so I hope not to have another!
