I bought a set of end cutting pliers at harbor freight but they won't cut close enough leaving me with a good bit of filing to do. What are you guys using, should I go ahead and get the Stewmacs?

I use the Stew-Mac cutter but only because a friend of mine (with more expendable income) bought them when he built a couple of banjos. If I had to pay for them myself I think I would try to take a cheap pair and grind them down myself.

Thanks Jim good idea, Fastcap makes a pair for $16 I may try them. Tired of doing all that filing plus it's easy to mark up the fret board.
I did what Jim said, I got a pair from Lowes and ground down the face on them with a sander, they work great.

Me too. They cut really well. I don't think the edge will hold up forever, but at the cost of one from Stewmac I can make 3-4 of these.

Sounds like that may be the way to go
Thanks
Hey doggy I just used the pliers and they're awesome, here's a link to a quick review I did

I use a cheap pair of small side cutting pliers. Just filed them so they cut close.

I didn't like the side cutters as well as the nippers.....

An even cheaper option is the bend and snap method. I saw it being used in the 1917 Ford documentary on uke making about 2 minutes 20 in. Can damage the fretboard but.

That's a cool video
Thanks

I use a set I got from lowes... instead of filing, I use a worn out belt on my sander. gets me darn near perfect in a few minutes...

Nice!
