Here is my submission, inspired by vintage 1930 Jack'o Lantern on a stick. I found an old Eastman Kodak Co. film canister that i hand painted and distressed. I used CBGitty Silver Skull Tuners, Chrome tail piece and Hand Wound pickup, which were all pieces that i was excited to get to use. In my opinion this Pick up is the best I've used thus far, It really snarls! This thing is SCARILY fun to play!
Here is the inside as a work in progress.

I built a CBG in February on a course at Lee Valley, but this is my first build of my own design. I'd been promising to build one for my 6 yr old twin Boys all summer but didn't find the time to get to it! Seeing the post for the Halloween Builder challenge, motivated me to get it done! I decided to build a shorter Scale Guitar for the Boys (22.5") and used one of the boxes that I had purchased right after my course in February. Little did I realize the importance of checking the boxes for cut marks. A few of the boxes I
had purchased had box cutter marks across the top which I hadn't noticed. I decided to sand the box top down knowing it would be painted and distressed for the Halloween theme.
The neck is made of Poplar, and is angled back at about 2.5 Deg. The headstock is angled back at 13 Deg. I finished the neck with a brushed on water based varathane and used Halloween rub on transfers sandwiched between layers of varathane for the fret markers. I hand cut the fret slots with a little jig I made up that worked quite well.
The box itself was painted with orange and then black Latex, then distressed and finished with Varathane. The Skull is a Halloween Sticker we had in our Halloween storage bin. It has a piezo pickup under the Bridge
A lot of firsts for me in this build but it was great fun!

nice!!!
Great job. Even got the Halloween colors in there too.
Here's my submission. It is Ivy League and has sufficient spookiness for the Halloween season, I reckon. I was given a large piece of Ivy taken from a tree trunk and challenged to make a guitar. Well, nothing was straight but then why should that be a problem? All that is needed is a fingerboard, tuners, a bridge and strings.... so I attached a piece of thicker than usual fingerboard in two places. mounted an old set of tuners behind and, using the cuts made already by the chainsaw, managed to build a platform to mount the bridge on. It worked and plays well. No resonating chamber so I stuck a piezo under the bridge. It certainly has it's own sound but has been well received at gigs.
This guitar has electric strings because I thought they’d look better with the cooler colors of the box’ paint job, as opposed to bronze strings. After having played the guitar for a while, however, I think I might change over to the acoustic strings, at some point, that I usually use. It sounds fairly good even when played unplugged with its electric strings, but I know it’ll sound a lot better with my usual bronze acoustics. Plus, instead of a mag pup, it’s dual piezo-powered, so who knows, it might even sound better with bronze strings, when plugged in..
Definitely overkill for a fretless application, I made the neck from hard maple mated to a red oak fingerboard, as I thought I might fret it sometime in the future. Small details: the tuner pegs have been finished to match the bridge, and FWIW, the box is a reinforced Hoyo de Monterey, but heads-up: most of the paper finish on the box had to be reglued before I began the build. Finally, the painted fret markers are rune (black art) symbols which just seemed to be Right for this project.
Thanks for the kind comments, guys.
kewl ;-)
