Fantastic Jim.  One of your very best and a great example of what you can do with mostly one finger chords.

Thanks Unc. I might have stumbled onto something. The strings are meant to be tuned GDg but I needed the key of D for this song. I didn't want to switch strings so I tuned it all the way down using the same strings and the tone mellowed out nicely. The lower tension made it real nice on the fingers as well. The only drawback is having to be careful with the slide to not clack on the frets.

Man, I like the story of the song and the singing a lot.  But it is the guitar tone and playing that grabs me most.  Excellent.

Jim that was so lovely, your voice keeps getting better and better. What a lovely song. I never heard it before. Super story and lyrics. Loving the way you play, you make it look so easy mate. What an awesome deep tone that git has.....sooooo mellow and rich. keep doing what you're doing mate and if you can tell us how that story ends when you give the lady the git, you got folks all over the world wanting to know how it ends (or begins).....oh hell there's got to be the making of a new song here. First line.....' I promised I'd make her a guitar, for what I didn't know' :)

Thanks Tim. Yeah, this song has been done by several folks but Levon Helms' version is for me the most moving.
