Fixing the Frustrating Fiddle - Acoustics are hard!

Spent almost as much time figuring out what was making a squawk sound as I did making this fiddle! It almost got turned into a mandolin.

Sounds like a fun experiment. Picks into internal amps and speakers. He,d know a good kit. I,ll bet the volume went up with that big sound hole even without an amp.

Oh yeah, any recommendations for an inexpensive, easy kit would be appreciated. Maybe one from Gitty?

Thanks wes and pick. It would be my first attempt at an amp so I might try one not built into a fiddle first.

Thanks Dave. It's still an open hole but pick is sending me a small speaker cover that I'll screw on there. It sort got me thinking to put a speaker and a 2w amp in there as an experiment. I'll have to think about that.

Very nice fix Jim. What became of the big access hole in the back? Did it remain a sound hole?

Thanks again Bug for all the info. I started looking at some of the links and charts. It makes me realize I don't know what the heck I'm doing but I keep doing it anyway. Now back to my healing balls.

Wow! That's a lot of interesting stuff Bug and SJ. I appreciate everyone's input here. I don't take a mystic approach to this stuff but wood does have it's ow n character and yes, it's own life even though it long ago it sacrificed it's life for music a long time ago. This is my 16th fiddle and early on I did research on sound posts and bass bars. I always use them on CB fiddles and, like this one, self made boxes. Many hundreds of years of violin making have pretty much standardized what works on these instruments and what I'm doing is breaking a lot of those rules and traditions and still trying to make a nice sounding instrument. For me it's kind of fun to experiment and thumb my nose at "luthiers" who feel there's only one way to do this.
Wow! A bell museum in France? I must get a passport! Anyway I just posted a vid playing this fiddle and then I'm on to the next.
