Where'd you get it? I have to find one to play with! That's frigging fascinating!

Comment by Glenn Reither on November 2, 2014 at 4:26pm

It's metal. Not lacquered. And for some reason not conductive.

It does look cool, like an old Teisco piece, haha

Thanks. Is the pull metal? It may have a clear coat and scraping it away underneath may give you access to a connection. It's not plastic, right? It may be lacquered...

I just realised the metal I used is ferrous because I've used it before to make an extender vane for a magpup.

Comment by Glenn Reither on November 2, 2014 at 12:48pm

OK. For the ground to tailpiece to work, it has to be conductive. This drawer pull isn't. So I used a bit of a baking tin which I know is conductive to correct it.  All I can tell you is that putting the multimeter across the drawer pull showed no current, so I had to put something in there to ground the strings. You are right about ferrous metals and conductivity. In fact iron and steel are relatively poor conductors, so I'm sorry for the misinfomation. In fact the metal I used might not be ferrous at all. Could just be tin and zinc, for example.

I agree that the guitar shouldn't be so noisy (only on the magpup setting, the piezo seems fine) and I'll have it looked at by me elec engineer bud some time.  The wiring is reasonably complicated with the 4 way switch, a magpup and a piezo and the preamp and the notch filter. It all works but there's obviously a gremlin in there somewhere. I've gone over it a lot and there aren't any ground loops in it but I must be missing something. It could even just be a shielding issue.

Glenn, I don't understand your comment about the tailpiece at all. Ferrous does not mean conductive, and all electric guitars have conductive tailpieces or they wouldn't work, many of which are ferrous BTW and many NOT such as the godzillians of brass and zinc pieces used today... Could you clarify the point of your comment? If resting your arm on it made the guitar go silent, I would suspect that there was bad wiring which may have coincidentally corrected when you made your tin mod.

Another question, by "tin", do you mean tin or a piece of a steel can?

cool

I like the drawer pull tailpiece but this one isn't ferrous. I had to put some tin on the inside of it to ground the strings. It's a shame, because your arm naturally rests on it and if it was conductive it would make the gat very quiet at all times.
