Do electric guitars really need a volume control for a guitar with (1) single coil pickup?

Do electric guitars really ned a volume control pot for a guitar with (1) siungle coil pickup... won't the preamp volume control do the job, instead?

You can use any type of pick-up w/out any controls on the guitar. On my CBGs I just run the p'up into the amp and control volume and tone with the amp controls.
I did put controls on my basses .... just because. Next one I build ( bass ) I probably won't put any controls on the bass.

Thank You...

Again, you do NOT need any pots (volume or tone) in the circuit. The pickup will sound a bit hotter with out it, and you still need to ground it like mentioned below! I wired a 6 string electric with a very hot hum directly to the jack and it is a beast!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool... Thank You... you've been very helpful...
how do you ground the strings ? I would assume the bridge needs to be grounded to something ?
I'm using a wooden bridge, so I've run a copper ground wire through the rings in the strings...

i used an old single coil and a jack. i grounded the metal bridge, but that's it. volume knob is not needed.

here's the guitar:
at 1:25 i play it clean tone
at 1:45 i add some awesome overdrive

hope this helps!
Kind Thanks, Crow, for your reply, it does help and is most appreciated...

Okay, I'm sorry, but I have to bite. Why do you HAVE to ground the strings?
